    Iro Ilk was born on 18 October 1919 at Nassau in Hessen. He served with LG 1 in the Mediterrean and North Africa participating in attacks on British supply routes flying Ju 88 bombers. On 25 February 1942 he recorded his first aerial victory when he shot down a RAF Blenheim bomber. As an Oberleutnant he received the Ritterkreuz on 21 October 1942. During 1943 he was Staffelkapitän of 1./LG 1. In 1943 he was transferred to “Wilde Sau” operations. On 31 January 1944, Major Ilk was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG 300. He recorded his first night victories on the night of 24/25 February when he shot down two RAF bombers. On the night of 23 April 1944 he achieved three victories in one night. In June 1944, III./JG 300 began undertaking missions against Allied bombers attacking Germany in daylight hours. On 20 June, Ilk was shot down attacking USAAF B-24 bombers and badly wounded.He was killed on 25 September 1944 near Moers in combat with Spitfires flying Bf 109 G-6AS (WNr. 782295).
    Iro Ilk shot down 10 enemy aircraft having flown over 300 missions. He recorded five victories at night.
