Heinz “Figaro” Golinski was born on 11 July 1919
at Nordstemmen in the Alfeld region of Leine/Niedersachsen. Golinski was
posted to JG 53 in autumn 1941. Unteroffizier Golinksi was assigned to
3./JG 53. He operated over the German Bight and then over Malta. He was
then sent as an acceptance pilot to the Messerschmitt concern. In August
1942, Golinski rejoined I./JG 53 based on the Eastern front. Over Russia,
he would excel. He claimed his first victory on 28 July 1942, when he shot
down a Russian R-5 biplane tactical reconnaisance aircraft. In August,
he claimed 17 victories, including his 10th victory on 14 August and claiming
three Russian LaGG-3 fighters shot down on 22 August to record his 13th
through 15th victories. Golinski was even more successful September claiming
27 victories, including his 30th victory on 12 September, his 40th victory
on 22 September and four Russian fighters shot down on 25 September (43-46).
In late September, I./JG 53 relocated to the Mediterranean. Golinski had
46 victories to his credit at this time. On 16 October 1942, Golinski was
part of the escort for seven Ju 88 twin-engine bombers raiding Malta. Over
the island RAF Spitfire fighters intercepted the formation. In the ensuing
combat, Golinski shot down one of the attacking Spitfires. However, another
Spitfire then attacked him. His Bf 109 G-2 (W.Nr. 10 582) “Yellow
1” dropped a right undercarriage leg and pieces flew from the right wing.
The aircraft went straight down and crashed. Golinski was unable to leave
the aircraft and was killed. It is thought Golinski was the victim of Canadian
ace, Flt Lt HW “Wally” McLeod (27 destroyed, 9 probable and 12.25 damaged
victories, killed in action 27 September 1944). Golinski was posthumously
awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 5 November, and the Ritterkreuz
and promotion to the rank of Feldwebel on 30 December.
“Figaro” Golinski was credited with 47 victories.
He recorded 46 victories over the Eastern front,
including 13 Sturmoviks.
